It's checkpoint time for our Almost Human Big Bang artists!

The usual disclaimer applies: all checkpoints are optional. If you don't want to check in, you don't have to.

What's a checkpoint for artists? It's a chance to share with the Big Bang community some hints about the joys to come. Tell us a little about the art you are making, or post a small teaser. If you like, say something about what inspired you.

This is also your opportunity to ask for help from your fellow artists if you need it.

To check in, please comment with the following:

Your name:
Project:
What would you like to share about your art?

Finally - the reminder.

Art rough drafts are due July 15, 2014. . Please see the previous post about rough drafts - it can be as rough as rough can be, but you must send a rough draft by the end of the day. We do not give extensions for rough drafts.
jimblair
This is just to remind you that it's almost time for the art checkpoint. If you're having any problems or anything else, please let us know. Good luck to all of you working on pieces for the stories. Can't wait to see the finished products.

Remember that July 15th will be the deadline for the rough drafts. I will remind everyone ahead of time.

Hugs, Patt

If you didn't hear from us, please let us know as soon as possible. Good luck with your artwork and I'm anxious to see what you come up with. I will be putting up reminders of the rough draft deadline on or before the 15th of July. You know where we are if you need our help. :) I like to think of the Almost Human Big Bang as small but mighty.

Hugs, Patt
16th-Jun-2014 06:00 am - Artist Claims
Almost Human 1
It's art claim time!

Rule 1: You cannot claim unless you're signed up as an artist. To make this easier, the artist signup post is still open. It will close 24 hours after this post goes up.

We have three stories in the big bang. Details of them are below the cut.

Last time I checked we had more artist signups than that, so Patt and I will run this on the assumption that all those artists are going to make a claim. We said right from the start that signing up is considered a statement of intent, not a firm committment, so if you signed up and now no longer want to join in, that's your call. No problem. But we will ensure that every artist who wants to join in will get a story to work with, and that every story gets an artist.

"Art" for the big bang is interpreted very broadly - it means any kind of fanwork that is not the written word. You're not limited to images. We expect artists to communicate with the writers but this is not a commission - the artist has complete freedom on the artwork, just as the writer has freedom on her story.

Here are the storiesCollapse )

Since we've only got a small number of stories, there's not a lot of choice here. So you MUST claim at least two of the stories, and you MAY claim all three if you want to.

To claim, comment below with

Your name:
Your claims (in order of preference)
First choice:
Second choice:
Third choice:

The claims post will close on Wednesday, and we'll confirm the art assignments as soon as possible after that.

If you have any questions, all the info can still be found in the sticky post at the top of the community page. If there's anything we haven't covered in those links, just ask below.
13th-Jun-2014 12:00 pm - Writers' Checkpoint #4
Almost Human 1
This is the final writers' checkpoint for our big bang.

The deadline is past, the stories all in. Art claims will begin on Monday. Signups for artists will stay open until then so there's still time to join in.

Why are we asking you to check in again? This isn't a check on your progress; rather this is your chance to show off your story and get everyone excited about the big bang to come. So if you have a story in the big bang, post a comment and tell us something about it. Post a short exerpt, if you like (no more than about 300 words, please), or perhaps just a line or two to tease the readers.

As always, the checkpoints are optional, but I really hope you'll join in this one, even if you skipped the others.
10th-Jun-2014 07:15 am - Deadline reminder
Almost Human 1
Just a quick note to remind our writers that the deadline is fast approaching. In the schedule, 12 June - Thursday - is the final submission deadline.

That said, there's always some wiggle-room so if you need more time please get in touch with us. We want you to be able to join in if possible!
31st-May-2014 12:10 am - Writers' signups close today.
jimblair
Just a quick note to tell you that the writers' signups close today and there will be news coming up in the following days. If you did sign up, thank you so much. We want to make this as fun as possible considering they cancelled our darn show. If you have any problems, please feel free to contact us here.

Hugs, Patt
Almost Human 1

Whoa, that snuck up on me! Everyone, signups for writers CLOSE on 31 May - that's this Saturday. If you want to get your signup in under the wire, the writer's signup post is here.

The deadline for FINAL submissions is 12 June. If you need to ask for an extension you must ask us before the deadline day - that is, by 11 June at the latest. You will be asked for a rough draft before we'll agree to an extension, because we must have something to give to your artist.

3rd-May-2014 12:29 am - May 03, Writers' Checkpopint #3.
jimblair
This is the third writers' checkpoint for the Almost Human big bang.

About the checkpoints:

All of our checkpoints are completely optional. If you've signed up to write a big bang project and you just want to get on with writing it, that's perfectly fine. You're under no obligation to check in at all until the submissions deadline. If you aren't ready to check in your own project, consider joining in to support our other writers.

So why should you bother to check in? Well, the checkpoints are here for several reasons:

• To help writers pace themselves in writing: each checkpoint will tell you how far along you should be if you're aiming to write steadily on the schedule.

• To let the writers drop some hints about their projects - this helps everyone watching get excited about the fanworks to come, but it also gives our artists a chance to consider which stories they're interested in claiming.

• To let people compare their progress with others, ask for help, for other people to offer help etc.

• And to remind everyone that the challenge is still happening :)

Target for Checkpoint #3:

If you're pacing your writing to fit the timetable of the challenge, you should now have about 7,500 words, or 75% of your project written. It's fine if you're not there yet! That's just the target to aim for.

There's no obligation to write to this schedule; the target word counts for each checkpoint are only for those who find it helpful. Some of us like to write at a steady pace; others work better in irregular bursts of inspiration. If the slow-and-steady approach doesn't fit the way you work, feel free to ignore the targets.

How to "check in":

Please comment using the template below to let us know how you're doing.

Name:
Your project:
Tell us a little about your progress:
Anything else you want to say (e.g. Do you need any help? Lacking inspiration or need a sounding board? Want to rant a little?):

Feel free to share some details about your project, maybe a summary or some hints, but please don't post actual extracts. There'll be a post for that as we come toward the end of the challenge, but this is too early.

To repeat: the checkpoints are completely optional.

A note about replying to writers: I want to encourage you to reply to check-ins. Let our writers know you're excited about their work! And if someone's asking for help, please feel free to offer it. But please bear in mind the purpose of these posts is to be supportive.

This is the second writers' checkpoint for the Almost Human big bang.

Target for Checkpoint #2:

If you're pacing your writing to fit the timetable of the challenge, you should now have about 5,000 words, or one half of your project written.
