Almost Human Big Bang
Writers' Checkpoint #1

Almost Human 1
This is the first writers' checkpoint for the Almost Human big bang.

About the checkpoints:

All of our checkpoints are completely optional. If you've signed up to write a big bang project and you just want to get on with writing it, that's perfectly fine. You're under no obligation to check in at all until the submissions deadline. If you aren't ready to check in your own project, consider joining in to support our other writers.

So why should you bother to check in? Well, the checkpoints are here for several reasons:

  • To help writers pace themselves in writing: each checkpoint will tell you how far along you should be if you're aiming to write steadily on the schedule.

  • To let the writers drop some hints about their projects - this helps everyone watching get excited about the fanworks to come, but it also gives our artists a chance to consider which stories they're interested in claiming.

  • To let people compare their progress with others, ask for help, for other people to offer help etc.

  • And to remind everyone that the challenge is still happening :)

Target for Checkpoint #1:

If you're pacing your writing to fit the timetable of the challenge, you should now have about 2,500 words, or one quarter of your project written. It's fine if you're not there yet! That's just the target to aim for.

There's no obligation to write to this schedule; the target word counts for each checkpoint are only for those who find it helpful. Some of us like to write at a steady pace; others work better in irregular bursts of inspiration. If the slow-and-steady approach doesn't fit the way you work, feel free to ignore the targets.

How to "check in":

Please comment using the template below to let us know how you're doing.

Your project:
Tell us a little about your progress:
Anything else you want to say (e.g. Do you need any help? Lacking inspiration or need a sounding board? Want to rant a little?):

Feel free to share some details about your project, maybe a summary or some hints, but please don't post actual extracts. There'll be a post for that as we come toward the end of the challenge, but this is too early.

To repeat: the checkpoints are completely optional.

A note about replying to writers: I want to encourage you to reply to check-ins. Let our writers know you're excited about their work! And if someone's asking for help, please feel free to offer it. But please bear in mind the purpose of these posts is to be supportive.

Name: The Black Sluggard
Your project: "Concept of Mind"
A gen case!fic crossing over with Heroes, hopefully with minimal series knowledge required.
Summary: John and Dorian find themselves involved in the high-profile murder of a retired government official—a case further complicated when the main suspect turns out to be one of their own.
Tell us a little about your progress:
I've got the plot nearly fully outlined, save for a few case!fic details. I still need to decide on what the climax of the story will be like. I've completed the prologue and begun work on the first chapter, of which I have thirteen or so already planned out.
(For a fun extra, all chapter titles are taken from the works of Philip K. Dick.)
Completed Wordcount: 1,112
Outline: 3,885
Anything else you want to say (e.g. Do you need any help? Lacking inspiration or need a sounding board? Want to rant a little?):
Depending on what happens in the finale tomorrow night, I may or may not attempt to incorporate the show's myth-arc (Vaughn, inSyndicate, etc.) into the story. I have a few ideas of what I'd like to see happen, but I want the series to settle down for the hiatus (*fingers crossed*) before I decide if I want to "go there".
The story is set in the same Heroes AU as my Castle series "Zeitgeist", but apart from the government agency that forms in those stories having a significant role in the plot of this one it should stand alone. /shamelessplug

Your project: A Maldonadocentric one-shot centered around the disastrous raid and its aftermath.

Tell us a little about your progress: I'm about 5600 words in, which is approximately one-third of the way through(so I say now, but three weeks and thousands of words later...)

Anything else you want to say (e.g. Do you need any help? Lacking inspiration or need a sounding board? Want to rant a little?): I'm currently wallowing in the "OMG, every syllable sucks!" phase.

Anything else you want to say (e.g. Do you need any help? Lacking inspiration or need a sounding board? Want to rant a little?): hahah see the progress. Maybe some chat posts where we could all discuss stuff would help?

Cheerleaders are great to bounce ideas off of and many other things. Why don't you sign up for one and we'll see if we can't find you someone that would like to be there for you.
